CySEC Concludes Fifth Cycle of School Financial Literacy Lectures Reaching 3,450 Students

The Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC) has announced the successful completion of its fifth annual cycle of financial literacy lectures in schools across Cyprus, marking a significant milestone in the regulatory body's ongoing efforts to educate the next generation. Between March and May 2026, CySEC officers delivered 18 interactive sessions across all districts, engaging with students from primary, lower secondary, and upper secondary education.

This latest cycle brings the cumulative reach of CySEC's schools initiative to 3,450 students. Significantly, the regulator reported growing momentum and strong demand originating proactively from both schoolteachers and the students themselves. Part of the initiative was implemented within the framework of Global Money Week 2026, which ran from 16 to 22 March, aiming to cultivate fundamental financial skills.

Equipping Youth for the Digital Economic Environment

The lectures are tailored specifically to each age group, moving away from dry theory and instead utilising interactive discussions and real-life examples. Sessions cover the essential basics of personal finance while placing a strong emphasis on contemporary economic challenges. Students are educated on navigating online scams, financial fraud, and misleading investment promotions—critical safeguards in an increasingly digital financial landscape.

Dr George Theocharides, Chairman of CySEC, highlighted that the robust response from schools confirms financial literacy is increasingly viewed as an essential life skill. He noted that young people are actively seeking knowledge to protect themselves and safely navigate the modern economic environment.

Strategic Focus on Financial Independence and Investor Protection

A central pillar of this year's programme is CySEC's key theme for 2026: attaining and preserving personal financial independence. To support this, CySEC has introduced a new Investor Guide focusing on personal financial independence in the digital world. This educational outreach aligns directly with CySEC's broader statutory objectives of promoting financial literacy and strengthening investor protection across the Cyprus market.

Furthermore, CySEC's school lectures form an integral part of its active support for the National Strategy for Financial Literacy and Financial Education in Cyprus. By fostering early financial awareness, the regulator aims to enhance citizens' long-term decision-making capabilities.

Market Significance and Analysis

While targeted at school-age children rather than active market participants, CySEC's sustained investment in financial education holds profound long-term significance for the Cyprus financial services sector. A financially literate populace creates a more resilient domestic investor base, reducing vulnerability to predatory schemes and unregulated entities. For authorised investment firms and financial institutions operating in Cyprus, an educated consumer market fosters healthier engagement with financial products, drives demand for legitimate wealth management services, and ultimately enhances overall market integrity.
