CySEC Backs Free Financial Literacy Workshops for Women to Tackle Knowledge Gap
Empowering Women Through Financial Education
The Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC) has announced its support for a series of free financial education workshops dedicated to women, organised by the Cyprus Committee for Financial Literacy and Education (CyFLEC). Operating under the banner “Your Money. Your Power.”, the initiative aims to bolster financial independence, sharpen personal finance capabilities, and narrow the persistent gender gap in financial literacy across Cyprus.
As a member of CyFLEC’s Board of Directors alongside other public institutions, including the Central Bank of Cyprus, CySEC is positioning preventative financial education as a key component of investor protection. The in-person workshops are scheduled to take place on 10 and 11 November 2026 at The Landmark Nicosia, Autograph Collection, running from 15:00 to 19:30 each day.
Practical Curriculum for Everyday Finance
Designed to be accessible to women of all ages, professional backgrounds, and experience levels, the programme assumes no prior financial expertise. Rather than focusing on abstract market theory, the sessions are structured around practical scenarios and real-life case studies that attendees can immediately implement in their day-to-day lives.
The training is divided into four targeted, interactive modules covering essential aspects of lifelong financial health:
- Preparing and managing a household budget: Formulating realistic cash flow plans, tracking daily expenditure, and controlling living costs.
- Saving and investing: Understanding the mechanics of asset accumulation, compounding returns, and matching personal risk tolerance to investment vehicles.
- Responsible borrowing and debt management: Navigating credit obligations, understanding interest structures, and mitigating high-cost liabilities.
- Early financial planning for retirement: Establishing long-term security early in one’s career to avoid late-stage pension shortfalls.
The Regulatory Significance for Cyprus
For financial regulators like CySEC, supporting grassroots literacy programmes marks an essential complement to conventional supervisory and enforcement duties. Modern retail financial markets have grown increasingly complex, with consumers encountering cross-border investment products, digital assets, and high-risk speculative instruments with greater frequency. When retail participants lack baseline knowledge, they face a heightened risk of falling victim to financial fraud or unsustainable debt burdens.
By championing foundational skills such as budgeting, debt moderation, and verified investing, CySEC helps foster a more resilient consumer base. Regulatory interventions are most effective when paired with an informed public capable of making independent, sound decisions before capital is put at risk.
Addressing the Gender Divide
The focus on women specifically addresses a documented disparity across European economies. Studies consistently demonstrate that women tend to live longer, face lower average lifetime earnings due to career interruptions, and suffer from larger pension deficits compared to men. Despite these realities, women are frequently underserved by traditional financial outreach.
Equipping women with the technical tools to assess borrowing costs, invest prudently, and build independent retirement funds provides a structural buffer against economic vulnerability. Strengthening financial resilience among women generates positive spillover effects for household stability and the broader national economy.
